Knowledge Lab · Mining and nodes

Can I earn money just by running a Kaspa node?

Short answer

No. Running a Kaspa node by itself does not earn rewards. A node checks blocks and transactions; mining is a separate activity that can earn block rewards. Running your own node gives you more control and helps the network, but it is not a passive-income system.

No. Running a Kaspa node by itself does not earn rewards. Kaspa’s community FAQ explicitly says there is no direct profit from operating a node. It also says there are no rewarded “master nodes”, special nodes that some networks pay for locking up coins: all nodes are equal, and Kaspa does not use proof of stake, a system where holders lock coins to help secure a network. [1]

A node and a miner do different jobs

A node keeps a copy of Kaspa’s blockDAG, the network’s record of blocks and their connections. It checks blocks and transactions and helps submit transactions to the network. These are verification and network functions, not activities that receive block rewards. [2][1]

A miner creates new blocks. Mining is the separate activity that can earn block rewards. A miner works with a node, but simply starting node software does not make that computer a miner. [2]

A wallet manages your keys and addresses and lets you initiate transactions. It works with a node to send and receive KAS. These roles are separate, even when software brings them together in one interface. [2]

Why run a node without rewards?

The benefit is control rather than income. With your own node, you do not have to depend on a public node being available, running a suitable software version, or behaving honestly. The community FAQ also identifies lower communication delay for your mining setup as a possible benefit. [1]

Your node also helps strengthen the network’s decentralization and stability. That is a contribution to the network, not a promise of payment. [1]

If you only want to send and receive KAS, you do not need to run a node yourself. A wallet can use a node operated by someone else. Likewise, mining through a pool can remove the need to operate your own node. [2]

The node itself does not generate income merely by staying online. [1]
