Can I stake KAS to earn rewards?

Short answer

No, KAS has no native staking rewards. Kaspa uses proof of work, so holding or locking KAS does not earn rewards from the network. Any separate service offering rewards for KAS has its own funding, conditions and risks.

No, you cannot stake KAS to earn rewards from Kaspa’s own consensus system, the rules used to agree on transactions. Kaspa uses proof of work, not proof of stake. Its community-maintained FAQ explicitly says staking is not available. [1]

Why holding KAS does not earn staking rewards

In proof of stake, participants commit coins to help validate the network. In proof of work, miners compete using computing equipment. Kaspa follows the proof-of-work model, so holding KAS does not give you a role as a staking validator. [1]

The important distinction is between network staking rewards and rewards offered by a separate application or service. An offer that uses the word “staking” does not change how Kaspa reaches agreement.

There is also a deeper reason for using proof of work beyond distributing new coins. In his Bitcoin Takeover interview, Yonatan Sompolinsky explained that he would still advocate proof of work even after coin issuance winds down. He described mining as providing an external, verifiable clock that helps the consensus mechanism work. Watch his explanation beginning at 4:40:36. [2]

Does locking KAS create rewards?

Locking coins and earning rewards are different things. A time lock restricts when coins can be spent. It does not, by itself, provide the coins needed to pay a reward.

On 6 March 2026, community member sione.kas asked whether covenants, spending rules attached to coins, could support staking-like rewards directly on Kaspa. That was a discussion, not an announcement of an available reward system. [3]

What to check before accepting a reward offer

Before committing KAS, establish:

  • Where the rewards come from.
  • Who controls your coins.
  • Whether withdrawals can be delayed or blocked.
  • Whether you receive KAS or a different token.
  • What happens if the service or its code fails.

Never share your recovery phrase, and remember that nobody from Kaspa messages you first offering help.
