How do I back up a Kaspa wallet safely?

Short answer

Back up your wallet by writing its recovery phrase on paper, in the exact order shown, and keeping it somewhere safe and private. Never save it in a screenshot, email or cloud storage, or share it with anyone. For a wallet with a different backup method, follow its backup instructions before depositing funds.

Back up your Kaspa wallet by writing down its recovery phrase in the exact order shown and keeping it safely offline. If your wallet uses a different backup method, follow its backup instructions before moving meaningful funds into it. Send a small test transaction first, and move the rest only after it arrives. [1][2]

What you are backing up

A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase, is a set of words that gives access to your wallet. Anyone who has those words can take the funds. It is not something to share with a person helping you. [3]

Kaspa wallets can use phrases of 12, 18 or 24 words. The words come from the BIP 39 standard, a list of 2,048 words used to create wallet backups. Your wallet determines which phrase format it uses. [1]

Make a safe backup

  1. Back up the wallet immediately after creating it. Do this before depositing meaningful funds, rather than waiting until you replace or lose your device. [3][2]
  1. Write every word down, in order. Check your written copy carefully against what the wallet displays. The word order matters when restoring a wallet. [4]
  1. Keep the backup offline and private. Store the written copy in a safe place. Do not photograph it, take a screenshot, email it to yourself or save it in cloud storage. [1][3]
  1. Follow any additional wallet-specific instructions. The backup requirement is your recovery phrase or the alternative backup instructions provided by your wallet. Complete that backup before moving meaningful funds. [2]
  1. Make a small test deposit. Wait until it arrives in your wallet before transferring the rest. This checks the receiving process; it does not replace backing up your recovery phrase. [2]

Understand what your backup covers

If your device is wiped, stolen or stops working, the written phrase can restore access to your funds. However, importing it into a different Kaspa wallet does not always recover the same addresses. Choose a compatible wallet rather than assuming every wallet will restore it correctly. [1]

There can also be accounts that need a separate backup. In KasWare Wallet, accounts imported using a single private key are not derived from the recovery phrase. That phrase therefore does not back up those imported accounts. [5]

Protect the wallet as well

Kastle's security guidance recommends a strong PIN, biometrics, Auto-Lock and keeping the wallet, browser and phone operating system updated. These measures protect access on your device; keeping the recovery phrase safe remains essential. [3]

Never share your recovery phrase. Kaspa has no support team of its own, and nobody from Kaspa messages you first offering help. Only type your recovery phrase into the wallet app itself when you restore it, and only into an app installed from the link on the wallet’s own website or on kaspa.org. Any website, form, chat or helper that asks for your phrase is trying to take your funds. [3]
